-------------------------------------------------------------------
** BRIEF OVERVIEW:
There are two programs included in this evaluation
(SCHEDULE.EXE & SCANNER.EXE).
1. SCHEDULE: this program initiates any executable program at regular
time intervals, or set times during the day (see SCHEDULE.TXT for).
installation instructions).
2. SCANNER: this scans a directory for a specific file at specified
intervals (in seconds), and then notifies you when the file is
found (See below).
** SCANNER background information:
SCANNER is a Windows background task program which scans a
directory at given intervals, in seconds, for a specified file. If
the specified file is found it is renamed, and then a customised
message is displayed on the screen, also giving you the file name,
size, and the time and date the file was delivered. SCANNER is very
useful in the on-line world, networking environments and has many other
uses where files are delivered or created automatically.
*********************************
** SCANNER Evaluation Features:**
1. The SCANNER background task window displays default header
information only.
2. Set the SCAN directory and Filename (wildcards supported) that
SCANNER looks for, using the default .INI file, allowing only one
SCANNER background task to be run. It is possible to run several
SCANNER tasks, but they are all reading the same .INI file and will
be checking the same information. The full version allows you to
specify multiple .INI files for multiple scanning tasks.
3. Set SCANNER to scan at regular intervals in seconds format,
using the default .INI file.
4. Customise the pop-up message on detection of specified file,
using the default .INI file.
5. Specify whether to include the time, date, filename and size in
the pop-up message, using the default .INI file.
6. Specify whether to record transactions to a log file of your
choice including name and path, using the default .INI file.
7. You can rename the file using two options types, the first type
allows you to rename the file to another file name, and the second
type lets you rename the file to the current date, plus a sequence
number to the total amount of times files have been found since the
program has been running.
***********************************
** SCANNER Full Version Features:**
1. The SCANNER background task window displays any information
header you want. This can be set before installation so that you
can supply the SCANNER program to your customers, with your company
details. If required you or your customer can then change the header
information to what they wish.
2. Support for Multiple Scanning tasks using any specified .INI
file, SCAN directories and Filenames (wildcards supported) for each
SCANNER task being run.
3. Set SCANNER to scan at regular intervals in minute format,
using any specified .INI file you want, for multiple tasks.
4. Customise the pop-up message on detection of specified file,
using any specified .INI file you want, for multiple tasks.
5. Specify whether to include the time, date, filename and size in
the pop-up message, using any specified .INI file you want, for
multiple tasks.
6. Specify whether to record transactions to a log file of your
choice including name and path, using any specified .INI file you
want, for multiple tasks.
7. You can rename the file using two options types, the first type
allows you to rename the file to another file name, and the second
type lets you rename the file to the current date, plus add a
sequence number to the total amount of times files have been found
since SCANNER was loaded.
8. Using a line parameter when the SCANNER program is loaded (e.g /R),
you can tell SCANNER to unload itself when one file has been found.
10. User friendly interface program which allows easy editing of
the .INI files from Windows, accessed through an icon.
11. Skips already open files.
12. Technical Support and license agreement (special site prices
for sysops and companies).
13. For site licenses, we can compile the program so that at time of
installation your company or individual details are specified in
the header information, plus you can specify what default .INI
file parameters should be used.
** How can SCANNER be applied?
1. Auto detection when downloading and uploading mail messages
automatically from an on-line service (See SCHEDULE.TXT).
2. Auto detection when downloading and uploading any files
automatically (See SCHEDULE.TXT).
3. Auto detection when using the low cost Internet mail gateway
solution (See SCHEDULE.TXT).
4. Auto detection when a file is created by an event such as an error log
file or any other event which causes a file to be created.
5. Let your imagination run free for a little while, SCANNER is very
flexible specially when used in conjuction with the SCHEDULE program.

** Parameters held in ".INI" file,
(see below for parameters used in the default .INI file supplied at time
of installation. Sysops and companies can specify the default parameters
at time of purchase).
Header(1,2,3) - Header information to be displayed in the task window.
Each line uses "Times New Roman" with a point size of 18.
The first line will be displated in red, the rest in
black. (Full featured version only)
ScanTime= - indicates how many seconds between scans.
Path= - directory in which to scan for files.
File= - file to scan for (wildcards allowed, i.e.
packet.*).
Message= - text which is displayed in the notify message box
when a file is found.
IncludeTime= - whether to include the time in the notify message,
of when the file was found.
IncludeDate= - whether to include the date in the notify message,
of when the file was found.
IncludeFileName= - whether to include the new file name in the
notify message, of the file that was found.
IncludeFileSize= - whether to include file size in the notify message,
of the file found.
LogPath= - path and name of the log file.
RenameType= - controls the format the file should be
renamed to. A value of "1" will rename the file
to the name given by the "NewName=" parameter (see
below). A value of "2" will rename the file the following
format, dd-mm.<ext>. The <ext> is a sequential number
controlled by the "RenameExt" parameter (see below). An
example: "05-02.Q01"
NewName= - file name to be used for renames when "RenameType=1" is
used.
RenameExt= - wildcard style file extension to be used for renames when
"RenameType=2" is used. trailing "?"s are used as
place-holders for sequential numbers within a given day.
For example, "Q??" will allow files "Q01" through to "Q99"
to be created.

enviroment, allowing multiple SCANNER tasks.
** WINDOWS 3.x SETUP Instructions!
1. From program manager, select the run option through the File-
Menu.
2. In the command line: type <drive>:<path>setup.exe. <drive> should be
replaced with the hard disk or floppy drive letter the files are stored
on. <path> should be replaced with full path to the directory containing
the files. For example (Command Line: a:\setup.exe). select OK or press
the RETURN key once done, to continue.
3. Set-up will display "Initialising set-up" for a while, then you will
be prompted for the path and directory the program files are to be
installed to. Select OK or press the RETURN key to accept the default
path and directory. If you wish to change this, type in a new path
and directory the program files should be installed to.
4. Set-up will now copy the necessary files and create a new group
containing the Program icon.
5. Once installation has been completed, Select OK or press the RETURN
key to continue.
- To run SCHEDULE minimized, from program manager select the
SCHEDULER icon by clicking on it once, then Select the properties
option through the File-Menu and click the small box with the
caption to the right "Run minimized" to add a check (X) within
it. Click the OK button to continue.
- If this is an evaluation copy you have installed, you will have
to edit the .INI file, using a standard text editor to
change default program environment parameters.
- If you have installed a full version of SCANNER, you can simply
select the SCANEDIT icon, make changes and click exit when done.
** Implementation:
- The program commences by reading parameters settings from the
specified .INI file. If the no INI file is specified, the default
file in the installation directory is used.
- If the scan directory named in the .INI file is not found, a
warning message will be displayed each time the scan occurs, the
program will still continue to run, but no files will be found.
- If the program is unable to find/create the log file name given in
the "LogPath" directory, a warning message will be displayed, the
program will continue to run with the logging function disabled.
- Every second, the program will check to see whether it is time for
the next scan. At the due scan time, a check will be made for a
file matching the given mask in the given directory. If found, it
will be renamed according to the rules set by the parameters in the
.INI file.
- When renaming to the "NewName" parameter, a warning will be
displayed if a file of "NewName" value already exists, the rename
will not be performed.
- When renaming to a date/sequence number parameter, at the start of
each run the program will attempt to start with sequence number 1.
If files with the desired date/sequence number already exist, they
will be skipped until a free sequence number can be found. If no
free sequence number is found, a warning will be displayed and the
rename will not be performed. When the last available sequence number
has been used on a particular day, the program will start again at
sequence 1. When the date changes, the program starts renaming with
the new date and sequence number, starting from 1.
- When a successful rename is performed, a line will be written to
the "LogPath" log file giving the file name, time, date and file
size.
** Although the program is designed to run minimised, if maximised it
will display the following status information.
Scanning for file: - mask to scan for.
In directory: - directory to check for files.
Last file: - last name an incoming file was renamed
to.
Received on: - date and time the last rename occurred.
Total files: - the number of renames (or attempts) since the
program has been running.
** If the parameters are changed in the .INI file, the program must be
reloaded before the new settings take effect.
