  18. ** BRIEF OVERVIEW:
  19.  
  20. There are two programs included in this evaluation
  21. (SCHEDULE.EXE & SCANNER.EXE).
  22.  
  23. 1. SCHEDULE: this program initiates any executable program at regular 
  24.    time intervals, or set times during the day (see SCHEDULE.TXT for).
  25.    installation instructions).
  26.  
  27. 2. SCANNER: this scans a directory for a specific file at specified 
  28.    intervals (in seconds), and then notifies you when the file is
  29.    found (See below).
  30.

  32. ** SCANNER background information:
  33.  
  34. SCANNER is a Windows background task program which scans a
  35. directory at given intervals, in seconds, for a specified file. If
  36. the specified file is found it is renamed, and then a customised
  37. message is displayed on the screen, also giving you the file name,
  38. size, and the time and date the file was delivered. SCANNER is very
  39. useful in the on-line world, networking environments and has many other
  40. uses where files are delivered or created automatically.

  44. ** SCANNER Evaluation Features:**
  45.  
  46. 1. The SCANNER background task window displays default header
  47.    information only.
  48.  
  49. 2. Set the SCAN directory and Filename (wildcards supported) that
  50.    SCANNER looks for, using the default .INI file, allowing only one
  51.    SCANNER background task to be run. It is possible to run several
  52.    SCANNER tasks, but they are all reading the same .INI file and will
  53.    be checking the same information. The full version allows you to
  54.    specify multiple .INI files for multiple scanning tasks.
  55.  
  56. 3. Set SCANNER to scan at regular intervals in seconds format,
  57.    using the default .INI file.
  58.  
  59. 4. Customise the pop-up message on detection of specified file,
  60.    using the default .INI file.

  169. ** Parameters held in ".INI" file,
  170.  
  171.    (see below for parameters used in the default .INI file supplied at time
  172.     of installation. Sysops and companies can specify the default parameters
  173.     at time of purchase).

  175. Header(1,2,3)   - Header information to be displayed in the task window. 
  176.           Each line uses "Times New Roman" with a point size of 18.
  177.           The first line will be displated in red, the rest in
  178.           black. (Full featured version only)

  180. ScanTime=       - indicates how many seconds between scans.
  181.  
  182. Path=           - directory in which to scan for files.
  183.         
  184. File=           - file to scan for (wildcards allowed, i.e.
  185.           packet.*).

  187. Message=        - text which is displayed in the notify message box
  188.           when a file is found.
  189.  
  190. IncludeTime=    - whether to include the time in the notify message,
  191.           of when the file was found.

  193. IncludeDate=    - whether to include the date in the notify message,

  196. IncludeFileName=    - whether to include the new file name in the
  197.               notify message, of the file that was found.

  202. LogPath=       - path and name of the log file.

  204. RenameType=    - controls the format the file should be
  205.          renamed to. A value of "1" will rename the file
  206.          to the name given by the "NewName=" parameter (see
  207.          below). A value of "2" will rename the file the following
  208.          format, dd-mm.<ext>. The <ext>  is a sequential number 
  209.          controlled by the "RenameExt" parameter (see below). An
  210.          example: "05-02.Q01"
  211.  
  212. NewName=       - file name to be used for renames when "RenameType=1" is 
  213.          used.
  214.  
  215. RenameExt=     - wildcard style file extension to be used for renames when
  216.          "RenameType=2" is used. trailing "?"s are used as 
  217.          place-holders for sequential numbers within a given day.
  218.          For example, "Q??" will allow files "Q01" through to "Q99" 
  219.          to be created.

  242. ** Command Line switches for Full Version (the evaluation copy has no
  243.    line switches available).

  245. SCAN /R   - This tells the SCANNER program to stop running in the
  246.         background after one initiation attempt has been made.
  247.  
  248. SCAN /I=IniFileName - Where IniFileName should be the name of the .INI file
  249.               you wish to use to setup the SCANNERS's working 
  250.               enviroment, allowing multiple SCANNER tasks.
  251.  
  252.  
  253. ** WINDOWS 3.x SETUP Instructions! 
  254.  
  255. 1. From program manager, select the run option through the File-
  256.    Menu.
  257.  
  258. 2. In the command line: type <drive>:<path>setup.exe. <drive> should be 
  259.    replaced with the hard disk or floppy drive letter the files are stored 
  260.    on. <path> should be replaced with full path to the directory containing 
  261.    the files. For example (Command Line: a:\setup.exe). select OK or press 
  262.    the RETURN key once done, to continue.
  263.  
  264. 3. Set-up will display "Initialising set-up" for a while, then you will
  265.    be prompted for the path and directory the program files are to be
  266.    installed to. Select OK or press the RETURN key to accept the default
  267.    path and directory. If you wish to change this, type in a new path
  268.    and directory the program files should be installed to.
  269.  
  270. 4. Set-up will now copy the necessary files and create a new group
  271.    containing the Program icon.
  272.  
  273. 5. Once installation has been completed, Select OK or press the RETURN
  274.    key to continue.
  275.      
  276.  
  277.    - To run SCHEDULE minimized, from program manager select the 
  278.      SCHEDULER icon by clicking on it once, then Select the properties
  279.      option through the File-Menu and click the small box with the 
  280.      caption to the right "Run minimized" to add a check (X) within 
  281.      it. Click the OK button to continue.
  282.  
  283.    - If this is an evaluation copy you have installed, you will have
  284.      to edit the .INI file, using a standard text editor to
  285.      change default program environment parameters. 
  286.  
  287.    - If you have installed a full version of SCANNER, you can simply
  288.      select the SCANEDIT icon, make changes and click exit when done.
  289.  
  290.  
  291. ** Implementation:
  292.  
  293. - The program commences by reading parameters settings from the
  294.   specified .INI file. If the no INI file is specified, the default
  295.   file in the installation directory is used.
  296.  
  297. - If the scan directory named in the .INI file is not found, a
  298.   warning message will be displayed each time the scan occurs, the
  299.   program will still continue to run, but no files will be found.
  300.  
  301. - If the program is unable to find/create the log file name given in
  302.   the "LogPath" directory, a warning message will be displayed, the
  303.   program will continue to run with the logging function disabled.
  304.  
  305. - Every second, the program will check to see whether it is time for
  306.   the next scan. At the due scan time, a check will be made for a
  307.   file matching the given mask in the given directory. If found, it
  308.   will be renamed according to the rules set by the parameters in the
  309.   .INI file.
  310.  
  311. - When renaming to the "NewName" parameter, a warning will be
  312.   displayed if a file of "NewName" value already exists, the rename
  313.   will not be performed.
  314.  
  315. - When renaming to a date/sequence number parameter, at the start of
  316.   each run the program will attempt to start with sequence number 1.
  317.   If files with the desired date/sequence number already exist, they
  318.   will be skipped until a free sequence number can be found. If no
  319.   free sequence number is found, a warning will be displayed and the
  320.   rename will not be performed. When the last available sequence number
  321.   has been used on a particular day, the program will start again at 
  322.   sequence 1. When the date changes, the program starts renaming with
  323.   the new date and sequence number, starting from 1.
  324.  
  325. - When a successful rename is performed, a line will be written to
  326.   the "LogPath" log file giving the file name, time, date and file
  327.   size.
  328.  
  329.  
  330. ** Although the program is designed to run minimised, if maximised it
  331.    will display the following status information.
  332.  
  333. Scanning for file:       - mask to scan for.
  334. In directory:            - directory to check for files.
  335. Last file:               - last name an incoming file was renamed
  336.                to.
  337. Received on:             - date and time the last rename occurred.
  338. Total files:             - the number of renames (or attempts) since the
  339.                program has been running.
  340.

  342. ** If the parameters are changed in the .INI file, the program must be
  343.    reloaded before the new settings take effect.
